    The expertise required to build the appropriate monitoring systems and documentation processes require resources and skills that few companies possess in-house.  Most sustainability requirements, including Wal-Mart’s Sustainability Index, provide very few opportunities for “one-off” measurements or estimated results.  For example, Wal-Mart has asked its suppliers to determine their annual greenhouse gas emissions and their production facilities’ solid waste creation and water usage data. Every material, component and process must be documented and measured, giving a “rolled-up” summary of the total impact of the product.
